Mikai Coulthard, Year 12 BSSC student, is studying VET Engineering and recently completed a week of hands-on training through Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) with Bendigo Engineering Services in Kangaroo Flat.

Mikai was able to practise skills and competencies he has acquired in VET Engineering, as well as strengthening his interpersonal and employability skills.

He was kept busy in the factory with lots of projects on the go. He worked on metal fabrication, frameworks, cladding, following plans, design and drafting.

He was also briefed on the operation of forklifts and encouraged to obtain his forklift licence if this is the career he would like to pursue.

“The first thing we did on Monday morning was a ’toolbox meeting’,” he said. “The oxy torches and hoses need to be checked, as well as safety checks on other equipment.”

“The staff have been supportive and have taught me heaps,” Mikai says.

When asked if SWL has helped Mikai decide on a career path, he said the experience had definitely given him something to think about.
