Year 11 Chemistry students were fortunate to work alongside Dominic and Raymond from Victoria University today, as the Victoria University Science Roadshow came to BSSC.

The aim of the roadshow is to inspire the next generation of Australian scientists with a real world, hands-on experience of scientific experiments that complement the VCE curriculum and allow students and staff to see theory put into practice.

This includes giving regional students access to state-of-the-art equipment—but, more importantly, the chance to experience what a career in STEM is likely to include.

Throughout the day Dominic and Raymond ran two experiments—both addressing key knowledge for Unit 1 and 2 Chemistry.

One experiment involved measuring the caffeine levels in energy drinks: the other involved groups conducting a quantitative analysis of an iron supplement tablet.

A variety of scientific techniques were used during the sessions today—giving students a real insight into day-to-day life in a laboratory. We thank Dominic and Raymond for their time and engaging students so wonderfully.
