The Australian Government has funded a new website designed by young people for young people with food allergies:  www.250k.org.au

Most of the time we don’t know why people have allergies. But allergies currently affect more than 4 million Australians and the rapid and continuing rise of allergic diseases is a serious public health issue.

Peanut allergy is well known, but lots of other foods can cause severe reactions—including eggs, sesame, milk, wheat, soy. Reactions may require the use of an EpiPen and getting the person to hospital as quickly as possible.

A national online survey, and focus group sessions with teens and young adults, identified the need for a website that provided age-appropriate information and resources. The website is now launched and offers information in a fun way to help those affected—and provides vital information for friends and associates.

The website (www.250k.org.au) allows young people with food allergies to develop their own avatar—or alter ego—and use this character to ask questions and connect with other young adults going through similar experiences.
