Basketball girls through to state finals

Congratulations to the BSSC girls basketball team. They have progressed to the SSV State Finals after winning the Loddon Mallee Region finals in Echuca on Thursday. In their three games, they defeated Kerang 54-16, Rochester 49-13, and Mildura 40-16. The SSV State Finals take place in Melbourne on the 19th September. Well done to the team: Brooke Mangan, Rachelle Mangan, Elisa Pica, Ahlise Hurst, Shardae Sharp, Poppy Blanch, Jess Rennie, Keisha Tonzing and Hayley Harrington.

Netball boys runners-up at Loddon Mallee finals

The BSSC boys netball team performed very well at the Loddon Mallee Region netball finals in Echuca on Thursday. A win and a loss saw then finish in second place. They got off to a slow start in their first game and couldn’t quite overcome the early deficit to lose narrowly to Swan Hill 18-14. They played some great netball in the second game against St Augustine’s Kyabram and ran away with a great 27-12 win. The boys take to the court again (along with the girls netball team) on the 10th August at the Netball Victoria Schools Championships in Melbourne. Well done to the team: Kane Farrell, Wade Donnan, Billy Robertson, Jackson Guan, Rourke Turner, Tom Nunn, Seb Spijkerman, Jordan Amor and Liam Marciano.

Nathan McHugh wins football best and fairest

Congratulations to Nathan McHugh who was awarded the Peter Hunt Medal as BSSC’s Best and Fairest player in this year’s School Sport Victoria AFL Premier League competition. Nathan polled 21 votes, finishing ahead of Billy Robertson on 17, Phil Moi Moi 14, Daniel Keating 9, Rourke Turner 8, Zane Keighran 7 and Seb Spijkerman 7.

This is the second year that the Peter Hunt Medal has been awarded, with this year’s BSSC Lions captain, Wade Donnan, being the inaugural winner in 2016. The medal is named in honour of Peter Hunt who was tragically killed in a cycling accident in March 2016. Peter was a match-day helper for many years for our AFL Premier League and AFL Sun Country Cup teams, and a well-known local footballer and coach back in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

BSSC footballers invited to AFL draft combine

Congratulations to Bailey Henderson and Kane Farrell who have both been invited to attend the AFL Draft Combine. 2016 student Angus Schumacher has also been invited. They are three of only 56 players from the TAC Cup to be invited. The Draft Combine will take place at Etihad Stadium from October 3-6, with invitees participating in a range of physical and psychological tests in front of AFL club recruiting staff. Invitees to the Combine required nominations from at least four AFL clubs.

Fantastic achievement boys. Well done!!
