Art Fashion students were given the millinery experience of a lifetime today when Melbourne-based, but world-renowned, Louise Macdonald, ran a series of workshops about hat design and creation.

Students created their own millinery project, led by this remarkable designer whose fashion headwear stands out at events—from the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival to Royal Ascot.

Louise has also worked in film and TV, notably the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice and Merchant Ivory’s Howards End.

Despite numerous honours, awards and international recognition, Louise says she loves the diverse nature of her work and enjoys going into her studio each day.

“I also get such a buzz from my students—it’s great to inspire others,” she says.

Once students had completed the basic elements of their headwear, Louise demonstrated how elegantly she had embellished the one she had made.

Year 11 student, Mitzi Smith, says her next step will be to weave artificial Australian natives into her project.
