These are the faces of four Bendigo Senior students who care deeply for our planet.

Year 12 students Meg, Abbie, Paige and Laura make up the Student Environment Committee.

The group meet regularly to discuss how we can create a more sustainable school environment and come up with ideas to empower our students and staff to make choices that will make a difference.

For Meg, the health of the environment has been a major focus for decisions regarding her lifestyle.

“By joining the environmental leadership team, I hope to make information and strategies that are more in tune with nature, more accessible to everyone.”

Abbie echoes those sentiments.

“I joined the committee because I’m really passionate about caring for our beautiful environment,” she says. “I believe that we can all play a part in creating a more sustainable school.”

Like many young people growing up in the world of today, it concerns Paige to see the advantage that is being taken of our environment.

“I know the struggle behind getting people to care about environmental issues,” she explains. “I aim to use knowledge to pursue the greater good of our generation environmentally—as even the smallest of decisions hold great impact.”

Like her fellow committee members, Laura wants to raise awareness amongst the student cohort: particularly regarding the importance of climate issues and our personal impacts on the environment.

The group work alongside BSSC teacher, Leigh Norton, who has always had a passion for sustainability.

I believe it’s crucial for students to embrace environmental values,” he says. “The members of SEC embody positivity and excellence, which fills me with hope for the future.”
