BSSC VET Electrotechnology student, Miller Coad, was keen to explore a week in the life of an electrician, so he completed Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) with Avery Duncan Electrical. Miller is in Year 11 and considering his career options—SWL has confirmed becoming a sparky in the future will probably be his path.

Working onsite, Miller has been using his acquired skills to help with rewiring a house currently under renovation, installing power points and taking on many of the tasks of a first-year apprentice. Other skills he’s used include communication, planning, teamwork and self-management—so crucial in the workplace.

“I want to get an electrical apprenticeship when I finish school,” Miller says. “I’ve been getting up much earlier than I usually would for school, but it hasn’t been too bad because it’s been really good working with Avery and learning stuff—including observing the other trades onsite.”
