As a Producer with the Southern Cross Austereo Network, former BSSC student Joel Nicholson has come full-circle, recently putting the finishing touches to a TV commercial for the college.
Six years on from his VCE, Joel admits he’s already done a lot more than he hoped for.

“After studying Multimedia at Bendigo Tafe, I now have four years of experience in the film and media industry,” he says. “The experience so far has been fantastic, and I am learning something new almost every day. Bendigo Senior gave me the foundations to develop my skills and I hit the ground running.”

Joel’s favourite subject was Digital Multimedia and he remembers the classes as creatively stimulating.

“We would be shown a new technique or tool in an editing program and told to go nuts and see what we could produce,” he says. “My teacher, Scott Vaughan, always came into the room smiling, was ready to assist, and had a vast knowledge of the subject. His encouragement and teaching ability definitely helped to build my knowledge.

“There’s no doubt I grew as a person at BSSC. Now, I won’t lie, high school sucked for me. Red hair isn’t popular. But Bendigo Senior felt more like a community – everyone was pretty chill with each other. If I was to give one piece of advice, it would be: say hi to the stranger next to you in class. They may just give you a whole new perspective on life.”
