Yesterday a group of BSSC First Nations students spent a ‘Day on Country’ at Kooyoora State Park with Djaara Traditional Owners.

The weather was beautiful for the smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country.

The group had a guided tour of heritage sites such as bathing pools, scar trees, cave shelters and rock wells for water collection.

Shani, the guide, showed students a number of artefacts from her personal family collection that are registered with the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Register.

After a barbecue lunch students took part in a Yarning Circle, contemplating the future, careers possibilities and community health before jumping back on the bus.

A collaborative project between Djaara and Parks Victoria, will soon offer new walking tracks with guided scanner codes that will allow visitors to hear and see Traditional Owners telling them the stories from this ancient landscape.
